VOLUNTEER AREAS OF SERVICE

Outdoor

 

Farm – For people who enjoy general gardening activities and are in good physical condition. Tasks typically include weeding, mulching, pruning, harvesting crops and planting seeds.

Facilities – Volunteers in the facilities department help keep ECHO buildings in working order, and do preventative and repair work on ECHO’s tools and machinery. Volunteers should have carpentry, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, “general handyman” and/or heavy machinery skills.

Indoor

 

 

 

 

Information Technology – Assist in the maintenance of ECHO servers, workstations, printers and scanners. Must understand computer hardware and Windows 2000 or XP.

Library – Data entry, basic word processing, locating and compiling information and shelving books. Should have basic computer skills.

Office Jobs:

  • Administrative Assistant: provide valuable support to ECHO staff. Must have excellent phone, computer and interpersonal skills.
  • Clerical/Data Entry: Process requests from overseas workers or maintain ECHO’s mailing list, depending on schedule and interest.
  • General Assistance: Folding, copying, stapling, etc. Also help with light cleaning of main office as needed.

Seed Bank – collect, sort, clean and/or package trial packets of seeds.

PR/Sales

 

Bookstore – Interact with and help customers in a friendly manner, and help with inventory and general tidiness as needed. Computer skills a plus.

Public Relations – The majority of volunteers in this area are docents (volunteer tour guides) or tour greeters. Both positions require a one-week training course. Other opportunities in this department exist for those with strong grant writing, website quality control or networking skills.

Additional

 

 

Jam and Jelly Making – Create delicious jams, jellies, custards, marmalades, etc with fruits from the ECHO farm. For anyone who can follow a recipe or likes to get creative in the kitchen.

Mushroom Research – conduct experiments growing mushrooms. Must have strong research and record-keeping skills.

On-Call Opportunities:

  • Hospitality: prepare guest quarters for students and visitors.
  • Transportation: transport ECHO students to/from airport or bus station. Volunteers are reimbursed at $0.15 / mile.
  • Mail Attack Team: meets approximately 12/year to fold, stuff and tape newsletters.
