Applications to attend IDDS Cookstoves are now open!
IDDS Cookstoves is a three-week cookstoves-themed design summit taking place in Kampala, Uganda from August 1 - August 19, 2016 organized by IDIN, the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, the Centre for Research in Energy and Energy Conversation, and the Centre for Integrated Research and Community Development in Uganda.
The summit will bring together 30 participants from Uganda and greater East Africa, train them in the collaborative design process, and guide them in co-creating cookstove design improvements that meet the needs of real users in local communities.
The deadline for submitting applications and references is November 30 at 5pm EDT, and late applications will not be accepted.

What is IDDS?
Created in 2007, the International Development Design Summit (IDDS) is an intense, hands-on design experience that brings together people from all walks of life to co-create low cost technologies that improve the livelihoods of people living in poverty. IDDS is part of the International Development Innovation Network (IDIN) program, an effort funded by USAID's U.S. Global Development Lab. IDDS is a collaborative effort organized by local organizers and other IDIN members.
Why Clean Cookstoves?
According to the World Health Organization, nearly 4 million people die each year from illnesses related to household air pollution. Nearly half of the world's population relies on traditional uses of solid fuels for household cooking and heating. In addition to the health hazards, inefficient cooking poses risks to the environment as well as the women and children who often spend hours collecting fuel for their homes on a daily basis.
Improved cookstoves and fuels present a healthy, efficient alternative to traditional cooking used in many resource-poor communities. While innovations have led to high-performance stoves and fuels, achieving high uptake and adoption of these products has continued to be a challenge. Cookstove users are seeking high-performing, affordable products that meet their day-to-day needs, but often find that products currently on the market fall short of those needs.
With IDDS Cookstoves, we hope to learn from innovative local initiatives and use advanced design and testing capabilities to develop high-performance stove technology suited to the full suite of user needs.
